a quilt with an antique center

I was asked to do something that I was never asked to do before. This star was salvaged from a quilt that was from the owners childhood. The fabric around the star fell apart. So I was asked if it could be finished again.

So, I used my serger to sew the solid blue to the star. I chose a pink border and long armed the whole thing with a Hobbs 80/20 batting. I did overall swirls for the quilting. I have to say that it had some stretching but overall it lays pretty flat. The center is fragile with some signs of wear but I think the stitching gave it more strength.

I have always been fearful of trying to long arm antique quilt tops. I think that it is not a scary as I thought it would be.

last 2 quilty things of 2014

I made a tardis quilt (from Dr Who) for my son in law. He liked it. I bound it in a star fabric. I quilted it in all over swirls. I enjoy making these quilts that are more graphic and less complicated in piecing. I think I have my plan for 2015 personal quilt projects. I am feeling the pull of Gwen Marsten’s style.

I made these pillow shams for my sister for Christmas. I love how these went together. I made these blocks as a test for Quiltmaker 100 magazine. I used my serger and felt like I put all of my sewing skills to the test for this… hems, quilting, piecing etc. I am thrilled that she liked it because I wasn’t sure.

What a Merry Christmas

2014-12-20 12.54.54

We had a great time with our children and grandchildren on our Christmas vacation. Its the first time we have seen the grandbabies since birth and the first time our college aged son has met them. We opened gifts and had a traditional turkey meal. It was such fun to watch the little girls open gifts for the first time and play with toys. It was even more fun to see the adults play with them. They were pretty excited with all the new things!

We drove the 2 day trip last week from Michigan to Virginia Beach. We have been to see the last Hobbit movie at an Imax theater, so cool. I loved it and I won’t see a movie in our terrible theater at our home ever again.

We drove to see the Great Dismal swamp. I enjoyed seeing the countryside. We had time to go to Busch Gardens Christmas  town. They had thousands of lights. We watched 2 shows filled with music and top notch entertainment , rode the train and the sky line ride, saw the 6 penguins on display and most importantly the girls met Santa for the first time. I had so much fun and it was perfect for getting  into the Christmas  spirit.

I found quilt shop that had modern fabric near my daughter’s home. Many shops in Virginia are cool but have civil war and other reproduction  fabric,  which are awesome but not what I am looking for right now. I met a Michigan lady there whos mother is in the nursing home right by my house. Michigan people always find each other, we must stand out. John Pinet had a catch phrase in his comedy that I love,  ” I have found my people”, pretty hard for this small town Michigan girl to do in Virginia Beach but I did at the quilt shop, of course!

Mostly we have been hanging out and playing with the kids, that has made it a special trip. Of course, we have all caught the cold thats going around but thats pretty normal this time of year, too!

After two days of driving home, we made it. And so far we are all still talking to each other. 🙂

Weekend adventure

2014-12-13 18.26.31 2014-12-13 18.26.51

We looked all over to find a Christmas tree. We were going to use the old one again however, we discovered that we threw out the old one last year. Sooooo, since we couldn’t find one we went to Bronner’s. It is one of the biggest attractions in Michigan all year, and it is the biggest attraction in December. But, we could find a tree anywhere else. I wasn’t ready to get a 4 foot table top tree. So we went, it was very crowded. However people were nice and not rude.

We went to a couple of stores in downtown Frankenmuth. I found some fabric grab bags that are awesome. I liked the pillow in the window, the texture is pretty cool. We also enjoyed the lights all over town an then….

2014-12-13 19.30.09Bam! We happened to be in the right place at the right time and saw some fireworks! In December, it is pretty warm after such a rotten November (50+inches of snow) and everyone is feeling pretty festive.

2014-12-13 20.22.45 Isn’t this fireplace at Cracker Barrel awesome! I love the idea of a fire but in reality I hate the wood, dirt, smoke, maintenance…. lol but this was so warm and pretty.

2014-12-14 13.22.49 And the tree is up. We are leaving town Thursday for a little over a week,  but I am glad we went to the trouble of putting up the tree. It will make the holidays last longer because I always leave it up until after the New Years sometimes even a week or so later. So our adventure was fun and festive. And it made me feel really good inside.

Confessions

2014-12-10 20.50.06 2014-12-10 20.50.13

I am so glad that the last conference I attended was about children. They left colored pencils out, and some candy but I was more interested in the pencils. I doodle my way through meetings but colored pencils, yea!!! I tried my hand at several ideas. Mostly what you would categorize as “comfort” tangles, and other things you don’t have to think about— just draw.

2014-12-10 20.50.31

I think that I need to take colored pencils and drawing pens everywhere but that is frowned upon at work and many other places, like church. I think in this age of technology and smart phones that maybe public doodling and drawing could be more acceptable but there is always a time a place.

I say draw on! I remember what was taught when I am able to draw during the presentations. I wonder if there are any studies out there that supports my finding. Hmmm. I will have to look!

2014-12-10 20.51.20

I knew it!!!! Article that proves doodling helps to remember!!!
